The KAWS x Uniqlo Clean Slate Tee is one of the most iconic pieces to emerge from the world of contemporary art and streetwear fashion. Released on June 3rd, 2019, this tee was part of KAWS and Uniqlo’s final UT collaboration — a drop that created an unprecedented level of hype, crashing the website and causing riots in malls across China.
The Design
The Clean Slate Tee features an illustrated KAWS Clean Slate figure printed on the front, with the artist’s signature “XX” embroidered on the sleeve. Crafted from premium cotton, the crisp base serves as the perfect canvas for the bold graphic, making a strong visual statement while staying true to KAWS’ minimalist artistic language.
The Story Behind the Drop
This marked the 4th time KAWS collaborated with Uniqlo’s UT line. News of the collaboration leaked two months before the official announcement, after which KAWS used Instagram to officially reveal the drop through several animated posts featuring BFF and Companion characters holding up different tees. Shortly after, KAWS announced on Instagram that this would be the final collaboration between himself and Uniqlo — sending demand into overdrive.
Why It’s Special
The Clean Slate design originally appeared as an etched drawing in the 2016 KAWS x Uniqlo drop. And was reimagined in a cleaner, more refined form for the 2019 release.
